Hurricane Dorian may spare Florida from a direct hit

Hurricane Dorian, which strengthened to a Category 4 storm, is packing maximum sustained winds of 140 mph with higher gusts. More than 20 million Americans could feel the storm’s impact. Preparations are under way to prepare for the massive storm. Hurricane conditions are expected in the Bahamas by Sunday. Storm surges there could raise water levels 15-feet above normal. As of 11 a.m. EDT on Saturday, Dorian’s center was some 260 miles east of the northwestern Bahamas and about 450 miles east of West Palm Beach, Florida, the National Hurricane Center said. The storm is moving west-northwest at about 12 mph. New forecasts say Dorian could spare Florida from a direct hit, but still bring life-threatening storm surge and winds to coastal communities. The storm is now expected to make landfall over North and South Carolina on Wednesday or Thursday of next week. While Hurricane Dorian makes its way toward the Florida coast, not everyone is fleeing the fierce storm. Commander Rebecca Waddington, Lieutenant Lindsey Norman and Captain Kristie Twining flew into the eye of the storm this week. Their hurricane hunter aircraft collects data for NOAA, which helps forecasters predict where th...

DeWalt Portable Power Station Battery Inverter Review

With the ability to handle the inrush load of a table saw, DeWalt’s popular Portable Power Station is the only battery inverter we’ve used that can make your entire jobsite cordless. The DeWalt Portable Power Station battery inverter and charger tosses its watts right in with several others we’re reviewed recently. It’s a very different animal than other battery-powered inverters with very real benefits on the jobsite. With the ability to handle the inrush load of a table saw, DeWalt’s popular Portable Power Station is the only battery inverter we’ve used that can make your entire jobsite cordless. It offers fewer total watt-hours than some of its competitors, but then again, DeWalt didn’t make this for preppers who want to maximize them. Charge time is also a bit slow and DeWalt makes a dedicated charger that works faster if that’s what you need. Its modified sine wave output defines it as an excellent jobsite option but you’re better off with a pure sine wave inverter for charging electronics. Given that I make my living writing about Silicon Valley, I pride myself at not being an early adopter. I find that by avoiding the bleeding edge, I can refrain from wasting time on never-will-be technology while maintaining a connection to the real world of technology users. Sometimes, I’m just stubborn. This explains why I still don’t have an Apple Watch (Also: I adore my inexpensive Timex Iron Man and wear-all-night FitBit Alta); why I wrote my book about Apple on a Windows PC; and why I got my first iPhone in 2012. (Oh, and a few months ago, I let an Apple retail employee talk me out of upgrading my iPhone X.) Apple fans (and foes) may notice my conflation of early adopterdom with owning Apple’s latest toys. That leads me to an area I probably am relatively on top of: Apple Pay and the Apple Card. I started using the payment system when there were few places that accepted it. I still get an irrational tingly feeling when I hear the ping of acceptance that my transaction has gone through. And Monday, in the three minutes between finis...

This comprehensive guide, produced by Aviagen, gives farm managers clear and actionable information to control the incidence of flies on the poultry farm. Flies pose a health risk for humans and poultry. They are carriers of Salmonella, Pasteurella, Campylobacter and E. Coli which have a negative effect on poultry flocks and farm personnel. The speed of fly reproduction can vary depending on environmental conditions such as warmth, moisture and food sources, but it is not uncommon to have 5 – 6 generations during a single summer breeding season. The key to avoiding fly infestations is managing water and moisture in the litter. Farms which keep dry litter rarely experience serious fly infestations. A successful fly control program ensures moisture is controlled within the house and fly breeding sites are eliminated. Insecticides can help to provide temporary reductions in fly populations but cannot be the only method of effective fly management. Whenever possible feed, litter, broken eggs and mortalities on which flies lay their eggs must be removed. Litter removed at depletion should not be stored on the farm or spread on land adjacent to the farm. It must be removed with...

Ice Energy brings the deep freeze to U.S. energy storage

The company has completed the first phase of a massive project with utility SCE based on storing energy in ice for cooling, which it describes as the largest deployment of distributed thermal energy storage in the United States. In nearly all regions of the United States, peak annual electricity demand comes in the afternoon on the hottest days of the year, when air conditioners in homes and offices are cranked to the maximum. It’s one of the main technical challenges for utilities and grid operators, which must sign contracts with power plants to ensure that they have sufficient capacity on hand to meet only a few hours of demand, and it can be hard to predict just how much they will need. In Southern California, one company has come up with a solution to marry peak electric demand with cheap overnight electricity prices. And in a field where interconnected software and high-tech chemical batteries dominate, their solution is both simple and oddly tangible: making ice. Earlier this month Ice Energy completed the first phase of a project to deploy over 1,200 ice-making and cooling machines at businesses and industrial facilities across the territory of utility Southern Californ...
