On a recent Saturday morning in Washington, D.C., I convinced my girlfriend to try a new

On a recent Saturday morning in Washington, D.C., I convinced my girlfriend to try a new way to get to brunch: We’d ride one of the shiny black-and-blue Revel motor scooters that had just arrived in town. D.C. has become something of a hotbed for micromobility experimentation—a rainbow of dockless electric kick-scooters vie for sidewalk space with Segways, hoverboards, e-unicycles, and other wheeled gadgets in the District’s touristy quarters. But the arrival of Revel for a four-month pilot represents a new twist. The company, which launched in Brooklyn last summer, offers a fleet of decidedly more robust vehicles—electric mopeds that can seat two, keep up with traffic, and general behave more like the cars and trucks with whom they share the streets. As my Atlantic colleague Ian Bogost wrote last year, the motor scooter straddles two transportation worlds: American cities really don’t make it easy to get around quickly without a car. Cars are loud and expensive, they pollute, and they take up public space. But until recently, the quiet, cheap, green alternative mostly amounted to bicycles. A motor scooter splits the difference between the two, offering some of the benefits of a...

Review: Irish Setter’s Crosby boots deliver versatile toughness

From the mud and rocks in the fields to the gravel driveways and metal machinery looming around us, there are all kinds of things that can make your feet uncomfortable in a flash. So I sought out a great work boot that can handle anything I threw at it — and the Crosby by Irish Setter checked every box. Over the past six months, I put these boots to the test in a variety of work environments and weather conditions, and I am very happy with their performance. The Crosby is lightweight, waterproof and has a high-grip diamond-tread rubber outsole that is heat resistant to 475 degrees Fahrenheit (it might sometimes feel that hot at the top of your grain bin, but you should be good with this protection). These boots were extremely comfortable right out of the box. After wearing them just a couple times — for short durations — I stepped it up considerably: I put the Crosby boot through a 10-hour work day on a construction site, and my feet stayed comfortable the entire day. The memory foam insole and midsole have significant cushioning, which makes the boots feel like they’ve already been broken in and molded to your foot. The Crosby is well-constructed (double stitched in most areas)...

Jack Winton Newlin passed away peacefully in his sleep on the evening of Tuesday, September 3,

Jack Winton Newlin passed away peacefully in his sleep on the evening of Tuesday, September 3, 2019 at University Rehab Center, Urbana, Illinois.  Jack was born on June 28, 1929 to Wayne and Leona Jean (Kincheloe) Newlin at the home of his (maternal) Aunt Nina and Uncle Wes Hogue in Marshall, Illinois. He spent his early childhood years in East Gary, Indiana, where his parents worked in the steel mills. Jack and his parents moved back to the family farm in Westfield, Illinois when he was in second grade.  He attended Richwoods School, a one room schoolhouse with 15 students.   His freshman year at Westfield High School, he met the love of his life, Ruth Roberta “Bobbie” Sweeney, and their lifelong love affair began. They graduated from Westfield High School in 1948.  After graduation, Jack joined the Army, with his basic training at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland.  On December 2, 1949, Jack took leave and he and Bobbie eloped and were married at First Christian Church in Henderson, Kentucky.  He then shipped out for his posting in Fontainebleu, France. After 18 months, Bobbie was able to join him for a year in France before his discharge in 1952.  They had a small apartme...

Sarah Hyland Dressed Like a Ballerina on the Red Carpet

The Modern Family star hit the blue carpet at Thursday night’s amfAR Gala in Los Angeles looking like a prima ballerina. Her dress featured a black velvet leotard-style top and a full pink tutu skirt with a silk rose accent at the waist. She upped the elegance of the look even further with a pair of dotted tights and black ballet flats high heels. Keeping with the theme, Sarah pulled her hair into a low ballet-style bun, and left her makeup minimal with a swipe of light pink lipgloss. TBD if she took the opportunity to whip out a move or two for the cameras, but we’d imagine it would be hard not to break into a plié or two in a look like this (and we’d be willing to be Sarah knows how to bust a move, even in heels!). Black Swan-chic has become a go-to style for Sarah Hyland, who has a background in ballet. Long before she was wearing high heels as Haley Dunphy, she was twirling around in pointe shoes as a baby ballerina. In 2016, she got back to her roots in a dance-inspired photoshoot for Beautycoach. “I used to be a ballerina so I thought why not try again?” she wrote on Instagram alongside one of the photos. And at the 2018 Critics Choice award, ...

What Every Electronics Engineer Needs to Know About EMC Chambers

An electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) or Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) chamber is a highly specialized piece of test equipment used in the testing of electronic devices against regulatory standards concerning both radiated and conducted radio frequency (RF) emissions and immunity.  There are many different types EMC test facilities, test cells, open area test sites (OATS) and EMC test chambers used for EMC testing. Out of all of the different types of EMC test facilities used to perform EMC testing, the most common one is undoubtedly the semi-anechoic chamber. Semi-anechoic chambers along with OATS are the preferred test facilities described in nearly all radiated and conducted emissions testing standards including ANSI C63.4 and CISPR 16.  These standards describe in great detail the methods of measurement of radio-noise emissions from low-voltage electrical and electronic equipment. The term “anechoic” means non-reflective, non-echoing, and echo-free. The term “semi” denotes that a portion of the chamber is reflective, usually the sheet metal ground reference plane located on the floor of the chamber.  The reason the floor is kept reflective and not loaded with absorber ...

‘Why aren’t we banning cigarettes?’ E-cigarette entrepreneur asks

Charlie’s Chalk Dust CEO Brandon Stump discusses why banning e-cigarette flavors would severely impact his business. States like New York, Massachusetts and Michigan already put down the hammer when it comes to legislation surrounding e-cigarettes, but one e-cigarette producer is questioning why there isn’t a ban on actual cigarettes. Charlie’s Chalk Dust CEO, Brandon Stump, was quick to protest Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker’s recent decision to ban e-cigarettes for four months. “It’s no surprise to me that we’re talking about flavor bans and how that’s appealing to the youth,” Stump told FOX Business’ Liz Claman on “The Claman Countdown.” Charlie Chalk Dust is a company that specializes in flavored e-cigarette vapor-liquid, in flavors like peanut butter and strawberry-watermelon. Prohibiting e-cigarette flavors was a first step towards decreasing children’s interest in partaking in vaping, yet Stump believes a ban could lead to another problem altogether. “What I can tell you is that 500,000 people are going to die this year from smoking combustible tobacco,” Stump said. Stump doesn’t want to be priced out of the market d...
